What is Firmware?

The word firmware originates from the phrase “fixed program”, a nod to its early days as a set of computer instructions that could not be changed. Most of the time you will see the term in the context of computers — it is what enables your laptop and other devices to function — but firmware is built into a wide variety of electronics, including cameras, microwaves and medical equipment.

What is Firmware Responsible For?

Firmware is responsible for helping software and hardware work together. Device manufacturers often perform firmware updates remotely, to keep the whole system operating at its best.

Apple, for example, regularly updates iPhone firmware to keep the system current with new technology. That is precisely why certain applications or features stop working on an iPhone that has not been updated in a while. Firmware updates can also remove bugs, fix glitches and install new features on a device.

How Does Firmware Work?

Firmware is embedded into an electronic device when it is manufactured. That code operates the device from the moment the power button is pressed, and continues until the device powers down or loses power.

Firmware code can monitor information about its environment and adjust settings accordingly. Your phone knows when the battery is running low, for instance, and can ask whether you would like to turn on low power mode to conserve it.

Who Performs Firmware Updates?

Firmware updates are typically created by the manufacturer and applied by the user. Some devices require the user to go to the settings and download an update manually; others update automatically, with the user’s permission.

This is a common occurrence in the electronics we use daily. You may have turned on a smart TV and found that a streaming app needed an update before it would launch. And if you have ever opened a program on your laptop to find the interface has changed or new features are available, the program’s firmware was updated automatically since you last used it.

When Firmware Updates Don’t Work

Old hardware may eventually become so outdated that firmware updates are no longer useful. An original Apple computer does not have the capacity to run current Apple programs, and no firmware update could bring it to the present day.

Manufacturers frequently release new devices with more advanced software and firmware systems, so users can run the latest programs and features. This is also why you see so many options for devices that look practically identical at first glance: it lets users choose one that runs more advanced programs, or simpler ones.
