The device outlives the platform it was built for
Energy hardware is specified for a decade or more in the field. The cloud service, the mobile OS and the cellular generation it launched against will all change several times inside that window, and a device that cannot follow becomes an expensive site visit.
We design the update path before the product: authenticated OTA, staged rollout, and a protocol layer that can be extended without reflashing. The fleet moves forward without a truck roll.
Connectivity is assumed, not available
Meters sit in basements, cabinets and rural sites. Coverage is intermittent, power is limited, and a design that assumes a live link produces gaps in exactly the data the business is billing on.
Store-and-forward buffering, resumable transfers and a device twin that reconciles on reconnect. Consumption data survives the outage rather than being lost inside it.
The equipment is physically reachable
Field devices are installed where anyone can touch them. Debug interfaces, unsigned firmware and secrets in the image turn a single recovered unit into a fleet-wide problem.
Secure boot, signed images, keys held in hardware and anti-rollback, designed in at architecture time — where it costs days instead of a hardware revision.
Data arrives, insight does not
A fleet reporting continuously produces a volume nobody reads. Anomalies are found in the billing dispute rather than in the telemetry.
Dashboards built around the operational question rather than the schema, with anomaly detection that flags deviation from a learned normal instead of a fixed threshold.
